The Better Together project funded through the Active Communities Programme harnessed the skills of a group of families and empowered them to develop and deliver their knowledge into the community. In order to promote positive mental attitudes families developed enterprising behaviours. Workshops for families focused on 4 main areas including music, cookery, photography and textiles producing artefacts for sale at an enterprise fair and pop up café.
Self-confidence and self-esteem improved as families engaged in positive activities, celebrated outcomes, realised their potential and improved their understanding of mental health issues.
Working together in a multi-cultural group fostered a sense of belonging which enabled local people to take ownership of activities and access more services.
Families hosted a fantastic community event at Abingdon School on Tuesday 3rd December. Parents and their children recorded original pieces of music, made artefacts to sell and cooked up a storm to make the Winter themed event a huge success.
Delicious Lentil Dahl and Tuna Past bake were on the menu followed by cakes and cookies all freshly made and served in the Pop Up café.
Sarah a parent from Abingdon School said ‘I've learned some new skills, my children have really enjoyed it and it’s been a lot of fun.’Donna a parent from Ayresome Primary School said 'I’m really enjoying spending time with my children and learning together.'
Becky said 'The day trips made me feel like a child again. It’s given me confidence to make new friends.'
Over 160 local people enjoyed excellent food and tasty treats while listening to Abingdon School Steel Band and the Better Together CD and there was even the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping.
A big thank you to everyone who supported the event!
