‘Crucial Crew’ is an annual multi-agency event for Year 6 pupils (10 and 11 year olds) held at Middlesbrough College. Iron Guidance are delighted to continue to offer this valuable project that was previously managed and coordinated by Middlesbrough Councils Extended team.
The scheme is designed to help young people to:
• Cope with dangerous situations
• Encourage personal safety
• Learn social responsibility
• Understand the role of various organisations
• Consider transition from KS2 to KS3
The scenarios inform and advise those making the transition from primary to secondary education about:
(a) Hazards that they may encounter (fire, crime, drugs, alcohol, etc.);
(b) The need to take personal responsibility for the health, welfare and safety of themselves and their peers;
(c) The various agencies (the ‘Crucial Crew’) that exist to support and assist them (police, fire, etc.).
Partner organisations have included:
- Cleveland Fire Service;
- Cleveland Police; (Consultation and Engagement)
- The Road Safety Team of Middlesbrough Council
- Northern Powergrid
- The Red Cross;
- E Safety team;
- Platform – (Drug and Alcohol Education)
- College Tour
Pupils participate in a series of structured activities organised by various agencies. The actual partners and scenarios used over the past few years have varied to reflect changes in emphasis given to different hazards that may be encountered by young children (internet safety being a more recent addition to the portfolio). ‘Crucial Crew’ also provides an opportunity to raise aspirations. The pupils see a college and realise that there is a link between their performance at secondary school and the education and career opportunities available to them when they leave school.
